Why cruise Antarctica?
Antarctica is less a conventional cruise destination than a moving expedition base. Days are shaped by ice, weather and wildlife: Zodiac rides between blue ice, penguin colonies, whale sightings, research stations and shore landings guided by an expedition team.
The best voyage is not automatically the most luxurious. Ship size, expedition experience, time ashore, included activities and itinerary flexibility can matter far more than the number of restaurants onboard.
What to know before booking
When to go
The season generally runs from November to March. Early summer brings sculptural ice and courtship displays; later months can offer more active wildlife and whale sightings.
Where voyages begin
Most sailings start in Ushuaia, Argentina. Trips commonly include a hotel night and transfer, but international flights and the journey to Ushuaia may be separate.
Drake Passage or fly-cruise
Traditional voyages cross the Drake Passage by ship. Fly-cruise itineraries skip one or both crossings but usually cost more and remain weather-dependent.
Ship size matters
Smaller ships can feel more agile and may help guests get ashore efficiently. Antarctica visitor rules limit the number of people landing at one site at a time.
What is included
Check charter flights, landing fees, expedition clothing, boots, gratuities, Wi-Fi, drinks and optional kayaking or camping before comparing prices.
Choose insurance carefully
Look for appropriate medical evacuation and cancellation cover for a remote polar voyage, then confirm the cruise line's exact requirements.

Longer voyages may add South Georgia and the Falkland Islands, trading a higher price and more sea days for exceptional wildlife and a broader sense of the Southern Ocean. For a first polar trip, the Antarctic Peninsula remains the clearest starting point.
